Zichy-castle (Óbuda)

Business Details
In 1659 it came into the possession of the Zichy family. Péter Zichy is credited with the lordship of Óbuda and he built the first castle in the first decades of the 18th century.

After the death of Péter Zichy, the construction of the castle began according to the plans of his son, Miklós Zichy. Miklós Zichy contracted Henrik János Jäger and Károly Bebo to build the castle. The main building was completed in 1752, and the annexes were built between 1754 and 1757. The staircase and chapel of the main building were decorated with frescoes, and its furnishings rivaled those of the nobleman's castles of the time.

After the death of Miklós Zichy, his widow returned the estate to the Crown in 1766 in exchange for a life annuity. During the 19th century, it served as a clothing warehouse, and in the 1950s, emergency accommodation was established in it. Since the restoration of the main building in 1974, it has been functioning as a cultural center. Today, its buildings house the Kassák Museum, the Vasarely Museum, the Térszínház and the Óbuda Museum.

In 2021, the government gifted it to the Petőfi Literary Museum (PIM) together with the southern part of the opposite Óbuda Island, which is planned to be connected by a footbridge.
