Avas Lookout Tower
The Avas Lookout Tower: Miskolc's Iconic Symbol and Modernist Masterpiece
In the heart of Miskolc, atop Avas Hill towering over the city, stands perhaps the best-known and most defining symbol of the settlement, the Avas Lookout Tower (also known as the Avas TV Tower). This unique structure not only offers an excellent panorama of the city and the surrounding landscape, but is also an outstanding piece of Hungarian modern architecture, closely intertwined with the identity of Miskolc.
History and Construction of the Lookout Tower
The current lookout tower is not the first one on Avas Hill. The first structure, made of wood, was erected in 1906 in honor of Francis II Rákóczi, but it collapsed after barely a year. In 1934, a beautiful, Székely-style, timber-framed lookout tower was built in its place based on the plans of Bálint Szeghalmy, which became a favorite destination in the city. However, this tower met a tragic fate: in 1956, during the revolution, it caught fire and burned down completely.
The reinforced concrete TV and lookout tower seen today was opened in 1963. The plans were designed by the two-time Miklós Ybl Prize-winning architect, Miklós Hofer, and his colleague, György Vass. Construction lasted only one year, and the tower quickly became a symbol of the city's modernization and rebirth.
Architectural Style and Features
In terms of style, the Avas Lookout Tower is one of the finest domestic examples of late modern architecture and functionalism. The graceful yet monumental silhouette of the 72-meter-high tower fits perfectly with the line of the ridge. The primary material of the structure is reinforced concrete, reflecting the technological progress and aesthetic aspirations of the era.
From the spacious, open terrace of the lookout, located at a height of 10 meters, there is a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Miskolc, the ridges of the Bükk Mountains, and on clear days, you can even see as far as Tokaj Hill. Above the observation deck is the glass-walled room housing the broadcasting equipment, and at the very top, the antenna towers towards the sky.
Fascinating Facts about the Avas Lookout Tower

- The anniversary renewal: For the 60th anniversary of the lookout tower's existence, it underwent a full reconstruction in 2023. During the renovation, it was not only structurally reinforced and modernized, but also received spectacular, programmable LED decorative lighting, which bathes the tower in a special flood of light at night.
- Culinary experiences high up: A cozy café and event space also operate in the lookout tower, allowing visitors to enjoy their refreshments alongside the stunning panorama.
